Things To Do in Ho Chi Minh City

This is not a list of 50 attractions. It is a set of decisions: which Cu Chi site to book, whether the Mekong is worth a day, how many days the city needs, and where to sleep. Every page ends in a verdict.

Quick answer

Ho Chi Minh City is not a sights city, and pretending otherwise is why so many travellers under-rate it. Its top-ranked attraction is the War Remnants Museum at 4.4/5, and its most famous market sits at 3.4/5, ranked #60 of 488. What it delivers is density: the food, the traffic choreography, coffee as social infrastructure, and war history that lands harder here than anywhere else in Vietnam. Give it three days — and book the two things that actually sell out: the Cu Chi half-day and a motorbike food tour.

Questions people actually ask

How many days do you need in Ho Chi Minh City?
Three, if you want the city and one day trip. Two is enough for the museum, the palace, the food and one neighbourhood; the third day is what makes Cu Chi possible without cutting anything. Five only if you are adding the Mekong properly, with a night in Cần Thơ.
Is the Mekong Delta day trip worth it?
Not as a day tour. Mỹ Tho is two hours each way and the water time is roughly 90 minutes, much of it on a motorised boat between a coconut-candy workshop and a lunch stop. Go to Cần Thơ for two days and see Cái Răng at 06:00, or skip the delta entirely.
Is Bến Thành Market a tourist trap?
By the numbers, yes: 3.4 out of 5 and #60 of 488 things to do in the city. The building is worth twenty minutes and the surrounding streets are worth an evening. Prices inside start at roughly three times what you'll pay two streets away.
Is Saigon or Ho Chi Minh City the right name?
Saigon is what people say; Ho Chi Minh City is what the map says. Almost nobody local uses the full name in conversation — and since July 2025 the central ward is officially named Saigon Ward, so the map has partly come round.
Has Ho Chi Minh City banned petrol motorbikes?
No. That is Hanoi, and even there it is a weekend trial ban on eleven downtown streets. This city has only a proposal, targeting 2028.
