Mekong Delta: Day Trip, Two Days, or Skip It?

Two days is the minimum for the real thing. A day trip is a sampler — genuinely fine value for families and first-timers who book small, and the wrong purchase for anyone who came for the floating markets.

DEPENDSWORTH IT as a sampler if you book small-group. SKIP if you came for the floating markets.

Quick answer

A Mekong day trip from Ho Chi Minh City is a sampler, not the delta. The standard coach tour runs about nine hours and yields about four on the ground, of which the signature sampan paddle is 10 to 15 minutes. If you came for a floating market, go for two days with a night in Cần Thơ: the markets trade at first light, and day tours go to Mỹ Tho and Bến Tre, where there is no working market to see.

Why can't a day trip see a floating market?

Because the markets trade at first light and day tours go the wrong way. Cần Thơ is now about two hours from Saigon on the expressway — still too far to leave the city after breakfast and catch the trading.

This is the part the listings never say. Cái Răng, outside Cần Thơ, is the biggest floating market left, and it is a dawn event: arrive late and you see mostly tourist boats. Since the Mỹ Thuận–Cần Thơ expressway opened in December 2023 the drive from Saigon is about two hours, down from three and a half, but standard day tours still go to Mỹ Tho and Bến Tre, and reaching Cái Răng at first light from the city would mean leaving in the small hours. A day-trip photographer gets midday haze.

Worse, tours still sell markets that have all but gone. Cái Bè, once Cái Răng's rival, had more than 100 trading boats in the 1990s; by 2024 reporters found only a scattered few, and in December 2025 they were boats selling to tourists. Products branded Cái Bè are still on sale. They visit canals and craft villages, which is a perfectly good day out, but it is not a market.

The delta's best-known floating markets, as last reported (July 2024 to September 2026).
MarketStatusWhat is actually there
Cái Răng (Cần Thơ)Operating, much diminishedAbout 100 trading boats in July 2024, against some 600 at its peak. Visitors in September 2026 reported mostly tourist boats.
Cái Bè (now Đồng Tháp province)All but goneA scattered few boats selling to tourists. Tours using the name visit canals and craft villages.
Long Xuyên (An Giang)Small but real23 boats in December 2025, six of them trading produce — the most authentic market left, and off the day-trip circuit.
Trà Ôn (Vĩnh Long)GoneNo longer a working market, per December 2025 reporting.
Ngã Năm and Ngã Bảy (now Cần Thơ city)GoneReported to have disappeared (September 2026).

The cause is not tourism. Better roads made trucks cheaper than boats, many traders never came back after the pandemic, and at Cái Răng a river embankment built too high made it awkward to move goods from shore to boat. A pier project budgeted for 2024–25 was meant to win traders back.

What does the standard day trip actually give you?

Nine hours for about four on the ground: a pagoda, a motorboat, a bee farm, a coconut-candy workshop, lunch, folk music and a short sampan paddle.

Memorise this itinerary — every budget tour is a permutation of it. Coach to Mỹ Tho, Vĩnh Tràng Pagoda, motorboat past the four islands, honey-bee farm with a royal-jelly upsell, coconut-candy workshop with a candy upsell, elephant-ear fish lunch, folk music with a tip basket, horse cart, sampan through the coconut canals, coach home.

Two of those names changed province in the July 2025 mergers: Mỹ Tho is now in Đồng Tháp, which absorbed Tiền Giang, and Bến Tre is now in Vĩnh Long. Tours still use the old names.

Group size predicts satisfaction better than price does

Under about twelve people and the reviews are warm. A coach of forty and they read as tourist-trap accounts. Price correlates with group size, so price is really a proxy for whether you will enjoy the day. When we surveyed the listings in August 2026, the top-rated Mekong products were all small-group and based in Bến Tre or Cần Thơ, and the lower-rated ones were big-coach Mỹ Tho products.

Two documented warnings worth carrying: some stops keep snakes, peacocks and porcupines in small cages, which is not announced in advance, and sampan rowers on the budget circuit have been reported demanding a US$5-per-person tip before letting passengers off.

Which option should you book?

Two days with a night in Cần Thơ if you care about the markets. The cheapest coach tour if you have kids or a tight budget. The speedboat if you have money and no time. Nothing, if you are heading into the delta later in your trip.

The two-day tour is the recommendation we would give a friend. For roughly US$68 to US$85 as listed in August 2026, it buys Cần Thơ, dawn at Cái Răng, and the delta actually breathing rather than performing. If you have 48 hours, it beats the day trip so decisively it should be the default.

The speedboat is the honest premium buy rather than a rip-off: it is listed on GetYourGuide and removes both 90-minute coach legs, which is the day's real misery, runs a genuine small group, and reaches canals the coaches cannot.

Routed by traveller

Families and budget travellers are well served by the cheap tour. Photographers and repeat visitors should skip it.

Book the Mekong properly

The two-day Cần Thơ trip is the one we would actually book, because it is the one that reaches Cái Răng at first light.

Questions people actually ask

Is the Mekong Delta day trip worth it?
Not as a day tour if you came for the floating markets — Mỹ Tho is about 90 minutes to two hours each way and the water time is roughly 90 minutes, much of it on a motorised boat between a coconut-candy workshop and a lunch stop. Go to Cần Thơ for two days and see Cái Răng at dawn, or skip the delta entirely.
Are the floating markets still real?
Barely. Cái Răng still trades — about 100 boats when Tuổi Trẻ counted in July 2024, against some 600 at its peak — and Long Xuyên keeps a small genuine market. Cái Bè has all but stopped, and tours still sell its name.
Can I see a floating market on a day trip from Ho Chi Minh City?
Not on a standard day tour. The markets trade at first light, Cần Thơ is about two hours from the city even on the expressway, and day tours go to Mỹ Tho and Bến Tre instead. Any day trip that claims a floating market is showing you canals, a craft village, or a handful of boats.
How much does a Mekong day trip cost?
It depends on group size more than anything. The big-coach Mỹ Tho and Bến Tre day is the cheapest option; small-group days cost two to three times as much; the speedboat and the two-day Cần Thơ trip cost more again. The options table above gives the prices we saw listed — check the live listing before you book.
