Bến Đình or Bến Dược? Which Cu Chi Tunnels Trip to Book

Which site should you actually book?

Bến Dược, if you have a full day and any real interest in the history. Bến Đình, if you are short on time, travelling with children, or claustrophobic.

Almost no tour listing explains that Cu Chi is two different sites. This is the highest-value decision on the whole topic, and the operators have no incentive to raise it — nearly every mass-market bus goes to Bến Đình because it is closer.

Bến Đình sits roughly 55–60 km from the centre, about 90 minutes away. Its tunnel section has been widened for visitors — local guides put it plainly, the passages were enlarged for larger Western frames. It carries a big souvenir complex, a shooting range and a video screening. Bến Dược is 70–75 km out, over two hours, and the tunnels there stay closer to their original dimensions, with deeper multi-level sections. It also holds the Bến Dược Memorial Temple, a nine-storey tower engraved with roughly 45,000 names of fallen soldiers and civilians.

TripAdvisor reviewers who have done both are consistent: Bến Dược is less busy and less touristy — and you have to push drivers to take the farther route rather than defaulting to Bến Đình.

What does it cost, and what do you actually pay on the day?

Budget 125,000₫ (about US$4.80) per adult in cash for entry, and expect Bến Dược to come in nearer 90,000₫. Most visitors never pay this separately — the half-day tours include it.

Entry fees are the one number sources genuinely disagree on. 2026-dated operators quote anywhere from 90,000₫ to 150,000₫ for a foreign adult, and it is not clear how much of the spread is the two sites differing and how much is whether a counter guide is bundled in. We have not been able to confirm a single official figure — the site's own page is closed to automated checks — so the honest advice is to carry 150,000₫ in cash and expect change.

Will you fit in the tunnels?

Almost certainly, and you do not have to go in. Every operator lets you skip the tunnel section and rejoin the group at the exit.

The original tunnels were about 1–1.2 m high and 0.8 m wide. The demonstration sections open to visitors have been widened and lit, and people up to about 183 cm get through with constant crouching. There are exits roughly every 20 m, and the first section has a 10-metre bail-out. One reviewer's summary is the useful one: you are not in there for long at all, five minutes at most.

Leave your backpack above ground. The interior runs around 28°C at very high humidity — hotter and wetter than the surface. The tunnels are not wheelchair accessible and are unsuitable for significant mobility limitations.

Claustrophobia is the single most common reason people regret this trip, and it is entirely avoidable. If you already know the answer is no, that costs you nothing at the site — the crawl is optional, and the booby-trap displays, the tank, the ventilation-shaft demonstrations and the surface exhibits are not part of it.

Morning or afternoon?

If you would rather not organise any of it, GetYourGuide lists every Cu Chi format — half-day, Bến Dược small group, private and speedboat — in one place. Bến Dược needs the morning because the drive is longer and you want the cooler air; in the dry season, aim to arrive before 09:00. Bến Đình is the counter-intuitive one. The bus-tour peak there runs 09:00–11:00, so if you are stuck with Bến Đình, the afternoon departure of the same tour is the less crowded one. You trade heat for space.

Can you get there without a tour?

Yes, by public bus, for about 32,000₫ round trip — and the bus route goes to Bến Dược, not Bến Đình.

Bus 13 runs from District 1 to Củ Chi bus station for 10,000₫ in about 1.5–2 hours; bus 79 then runs Củ Chi to Bến Dược for 6,000₫ in 30–45 minutes. Ask the driver for Bến Dược. Add the entry fee on arrival and the whole day costs a fraction of a tour, but budget 6–8 hours and be aware one operator warns 2.5–3 hours each way.

Do not buy the Mekong combo to fit this in

The Cu Chi and Mekong same-day combo is the most-sold and most-regretted product in southern Vietnam. It has a lower rating than the half-day Cu Chi tour it contains.

Cu Chi is northwest of the city. The Mekong day-trip towns are southwest. The combo drives back through Saigon in the middle of the day and spends four to five hours on a bus to deliver a bit over an hour at each end.
